Debuting at Performance Space & Carriageworks, Sydney, November 6th 2014
McMillan has recently presented a major project for Performance Space in Sydney. The work is composed of five inter-linking films that narrate a descent into madness as the past erupts from three island sites around the world. The work includes a new sound work composed by Cat Hope and performed by the London Improvisors Orchestra. The installation unveils the intertwining histories of imprisonment and banishment linked to island locations around Australia (Port Arthur, Wadjemup/Rottnest Island) and the Greek island of Pontikonisi through an atmospheric, immersive landscape of sound, sculpture and video. The exhibition traces legacies of the Enlightenment to their colonial manifestation in Australia through a narrative where a protagonist’s retreat to an island is followed by a rapid decent into madness, as memories of the past collapse into the present.
The research is funded in part by the 2013 Creative Development Fellowship from the Department for Culture and the Arts, Western Australia. A monograph on McMillan's practice will also be launched after the project with text by Curator Bec Dean and David Elliott, and an interview between Kate McMillan and Cat Hope.
